Paris

A coffee fueled weekend in Paris

Story by Amaresh Ray March 29th, 2014
“Paris is so beautiful that I sometimes forget how beautiful it is.”

My friend David overheard a tourist say the above words and sniggered. This was going to be my fourth visit to the city in the last couple of years. This time however I wanted to stay off the touristy path and just experience the city as a local.

We decided to hit up a bunch of staples and some new places that had been “trending”, including a handful of coffee shops that serve filter coffee.

Holybelly

Holybelly cafe opened in Paris’ 10th arrondissement back in October and has quickly become the go-to brunch spot for a lot of Parisians. They offer a stellar breakfast and lunch menu along with some pretty solid Belleville coffee.

Belleville brûlerie

Having been intrigued by the Belleville coffee at Holybelly, we decided to check out the roastery in the 20th arrondissement. Opened in September 2013, Belleville’s mission is to bring great pour over to a city of espresso drinkers. The roastery is open to the public on Saturdays, where the owners lovingly hand brew coffee for customers while sharing their love and knowledge for coffee.

It didn’t take us long to gulp down all that excellent coffee.

CANDELARIA

A tiny room in the Marais district that serves great tacos and cocktails, Candelaria is one of Paris’ hottest restaurants right now. It features a limited menu of tacos and toastadas, an open kitchen with communal seating and often long queues of patrons (we went at 4pm on a Saturday).

Cactus on a toastada - just the way they do it in California.

Coutume cafe

Another great place for coffee geeks, Coutume roast their single-origin beans on premises and offer a variety of brew methods, from espresso to siphon.

The carrot cake went down nicely with the filter coffee.
